Farming Solutions is a website jointly created by Greenpeace, Oxfam and ILEIA. It demonstrates how food security and sustainable livelihoods can be achieved across the globe by innovative and environmentally responsible farming systems. The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) at the University of California provides a useful introduction to this subject: www.sarep.ucdavis.edu/concept.htm

Sustainable Development Dimensions is an information service of FAO, which addresses issues such as people's participation, women in agriculture, land tenure, agricultural extension and environmental planning. The address is: www.fao.org/WAICENT/FAOINFO/SUSTDEV/

ILEIA, is the Centre for Information on Low-External-Input and Sustainable Agriculture, based in the Netherlands. For more than 15 years the LEISA newletter and magazine have been a major source of information about sustainable agriculture projects around the world. IFOAM is the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, which has established widely recognised standards for pollution-free agriculture. ecoweb.dk/ifoam/

The World Resources Institute (WRI) is a key source of information about the relationship between agriculture and biodiversity. www.wri.org/

The Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI)
organises campaigns to conserve genetic diversity in agriculture and prevent bio-piracy. www.rafi.org/

The Friends of the Earth maintain a number of web pages on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security which focus on the issue of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

The Food and Fertilizer Technology Center is an international information centre funded by the Governments  of Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Taiwan. The website includes a large on-line library focusing on agriculture in Asia. www.agnet.org/

The Research Foundation for Science Technology and the Environment, is campaigning to preserve agricultural biodiversity in India. The founder, Vandana Shiva, is playing a key role in the 'Diverse Women for Diversity' initiative.  www.vshiva.org/

The Journal of Agricultural Education and Extension describes itself as 'the international journal on changes in agricultural knowledge and action systems'. The contents of recent issues, which cover developments in many parts of the world, can be downloaded as pdf files.  www.bib.wau.nl/ejae/

Food First, also known as 'The Institute for Food and Development Policy', carries out policy studies and advocacy campaigns related to hunger and poverty. Food First are the publishers of Circle of Poison: Pesticides and People in a Hungry World. www.foodfirst.org 

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy promotes resilient family farms, rural communities and ecosystems around the world through research and education, science and technology, and advocacy'. www.iatp.org/

Ecological Agriculture is a large collection of links to internet sites in different parts of the world. The list is produced by 'People in Action' which also maintains other lists for subjects such as developing countries, ecology, appropriate technology and human rights.  www.gn.apc.org/peopleinaction/agriculture.html

The Southern Alternative Agriculture Network (SAAN), based in Thailand, promotes rural livelihoods based on Buddhist values. www.geocities.com/RainForest/7813/

The Centre for Alternative Agricultural Media describes itself as "a non-government organization in India working for farmer friendly communication system".  The site includes bulletins on Endosulfan, Bt cotton, farmer scientists and 'self-help journalism'. www.farmedia.org/

 
Pesticides and Health

Pesticide Action Network (PAN) is a global coalition of citizen's groups and individuals who oppose the misuse and overuse of pesticides, and support the reliance on safe and sustainable alternatives. The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) helps to create awareness of environmental problems by publishing reports and  training local activists. The EJF report 'Death in Small Doses' takes a comprehensive look at the pesticide problem in Cambodia. This iand other reports can be downloaded from www.ejfoundation.org

The Pesticide Policy Project at Hannover University has published a number of reports which can be downloaded from this site, including 'Evaluation of IPM Programs' and 'Pesticide Use Practices, Productivitry and Farmers Health'. www.ifgb.uni-hannover.de/ppp/

The UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) maintain a joint site focusing on chemical pollutants, which includes details of international agreements. irptc.unep.ch/

The International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN) is a global network of NGOs which share the goal of the global elimination of persistent organic pollutants.www.ipen.org/

The International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) is a joint effort of three UN Agencies (ILO, UNEP and WHO). www.who.int/pcs/

The World Wildlife Fund has a Global Toxics Initiative which includes a programme on the prevention of Agricultural Pollution. The website includes a useful reading list. www.worldwildlife.org/

The aim of the Environmental Research Foundation is "providing understandable scientific information about human health and the environment". The site includes an archive of Rachel's Weekly, a free newsletter which is also available by e-mail.  www.rachel.org/

The authors of Our Stolen Future provide regular updates about research into endocrine disruption at this site: www.osf-facts.org/ 

The Science and Environmental Health Network has a collection of materials on the Precautionary Principle, including a FAQ and a Handbook which can be downloaded.   www.sehn.org/

Pesticides in Schools:  Reducing the Risks.  This is the latest version of the report by the New York Attorney General's office. The ASEAN IPM Knowledge Network has a large on-line catalog of IPM-related documents, which can be requested by members of the network.asean-ipm.searca.org

IPMnet is a large site run by the Consortium for International Crop Protection. It includes an archive of IPMnet News (a monthly newsletter) plus a database and an on-line text-book. Go to: www.IPMnet.org

The Plant Protection Service of FAO has an overview of FAO's IPM activities at: www.fao.org/WAICENT/FAOINFO/AGRICULT/AGP/AGPP/IPM/

The Global Plant and Pest Information Service created by FAO included an on-line database of more than 11,300 plants and 9,500 pests. GPPIS has now been integrated into Ecoport, see this address for details: www.fao.org/ag/AGP/Ecoport.htm

The Systemwide Program on IPM is an Inter-Center Initiative of the CGIAR. The site includes a database of IPM-related research projects at International Centers such as IRRI, CIMMYT and ICRISAT. The address is www.cgiar.org/spipm/

The Asia Office of the International Potato Center (CIP) has a useful file library including documents about IPM, Farmer Field Schools and Participatory Research. The website also has training materials for integrated management of potato and sweet potato. www.eseap.cipotato.org/

IPM CRSP is a USAID-supported research, education/training, and information exchange collaborative partnership among US and developing country institutions. www.cals.vt.edu/ipmcrsp/index.html

The IPMAfrica website gives access to more than 20 on-line discussion groups, sponsored by ICIPE and USAID  informatics.icipe.org/IPMAfrica/

The stated aim of IPM Forum is 'to enhance and link existing IPM initiatives to form new, co-operative and synergistic ventures'. Aimed at policy makers, researchers, extensionists, NGO's, private sector... and farmers. Now coordinated by CABI, the address is: www.cabi-publishing.org/IPM/index.htm

The CSIRO Rodent Research Group is based in Australia but is involved in ecologically-based rat management across Asia. The site includes research reports and how to subscribe to a free newsletter. www.dwe.csiro.au/research/progv/rodents/ 

 

Sustainable Development 

The WWW Virtual Library - Sustainable Development.  This is a massive list of internet sites including organisations, projects and activities, electronic journals, libraries, references, documents  databases, and directories. www.ulb.ac.be/ceese/meta/sustvl.html

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is involved in policy research, information exchange, analysis and advocacy. Issues include natural resource management, climate change and international trade. iisd1.iisd.ca/  IISD also run Linkages, an electronic clearing house on international meetings related to environment and development policy.  From here you can subscribe to the Earth Negotiations Bulletin: www.iisd.ca/  

At the site of the Sustainability Institute you can download a copy of 'Indicators and Information Systems for Sustainable Development' by Donella H. Meadows (1998), 78pp  www.sustainer.org/

The aim of the Earth Charter is to build a global partnership for sustainable development. The final version of the declaration includes sections on ecological integrity, economic and social justice, democracy, non violence and peace. Available on-line in 14 languages, plus resource materials. www.earthcharter.org/

Green Cross International was launched by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993 to 'help create the conditions for a sustainable future by cultivating a more harmonious relationship between humans and the environment'. GCI campaigns include water conflict prevention, environmental education, and energy efficiency. www.gci.ch/

NRM Changelinks is an excellent site for people interested in Natural Resource Management and Participatory Development.  This guide to on-line resources includes sections on 'sustainable development and the environment', 'participatory M&E', and 'action research'. nrm.massey.ac.nz/changelinks/

The UN Commission on Sustainable Development monitors the implementation of Agenda 21 and has a comprehensive database of national information relating to social, economic and environmental development: www.un.org/esa/sustdev/

Eldis is a gateway to online information on development in countries of the South. Thousands of documents are stored at this site. Subjects include: Farmer Participatory Research, Development Education, Biodiversity and Conservation nt1.ids.ac.uk/eldis/

A number of strategy papers and manuals on governance, gender, participation and technology for sustainable livelihoods can be downloaded from the UNDP Sustainable Livelihoods Unit www.undp.org/sl/index.htm

PARnet is a site specialising in Participatory Action Research maintained by Cornell University. It includes the 'PARchives' which consist of more than 500 documents which can be searched, downloaded and/or ordered. www.parnet.org/home.cfm

Christian Aid has produced a number of thought-provoking reports on issues such as genetically-modified food, globalisation and debt. The reports can be downloaded or read online at this address: www.christian-aid.org.uk/f_reports.htm

The Global Scenarios Group (GSG) is an international initiative to assess long-range environment and development futures, raise public awareness and identify actions required for a sustainable future.  GSG reports can be downloaded from this site. www.gsg.org/.

The Institute for Social Ecology has a library of essays by authors such as Murray Bookchin who examine social and economic development from an ecological perspective.  www.social-ecology.org/

Via Campesino describes itself as "world wide movement that unites landless peasants, small and medium-sized producers, agricultural workers, rural women and indigenous communities in the struggle against the globalization of the economy" The site includes a list of  associated organisations in 40 countries and a booklet on 'Food Sovereignty'. ns.sdnhon.org.hn/miembros/via/

 

Environmental Education

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies based in Japan has an Environmental Education project which has published a number of reports on the internet. For example "Perspectives of Environmental Education in the Asia-Pacific Region" and "The Present State of EE in Indonesia" can be downloaded as pdf files. www.iges.or.jp/ee/index-e.htm  

The Education for Sustainable Development Toolkit is based on concepts which were discussed at the Earth Summit and agreed as part of Agenda 21. The Toolkit, which includes a number of exercises and worksheets, can be downloaded as a pdf file from this address: www.esdtoolkit.org/

Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment - GLOBE involves students from over 80 countries in collecting local environmental data. Observations are shared between schools and with scientists via the internet. www.globe.gov/

EcoSchools.com describes itself as 'a clearinghouse of information about ecologically designed schools and schoolyards'.  The site was still under construction in mid 2001, but already included more than 30 case studies from American schools. www.ecoschools.com/  

Colloboration between FAO, UNESCO, Peace Corp, and other agencies has produce Feeding Minds, a site which provides materials for teachers and school children on the subject of hunger and malnutrition. www.feedingminds.org

EE-link is a project of the North American Association for Environmental Education. The website is a good starting point for getting information about EE organisations and classroom resources in America. eelink.net/

Second Nature is an American organisation that helps colleges and universities expand their efforts to make environmentally sustainable action a foundation of learning and practice. Kids Growing Food is a project involving more than 100 schools in New York State.  The project started with funds from the Attorney General's Office, as the result of the settlement of an antitrust lawsuit brought against a pesticide manufacturer.
