·        More that 300 IPM Field Schools have been carried out under the National IPM Programme which is coordinated by the Department of Agronomy. Funds have been provided by the Government of Australia through FAO.

 ·        In 1998, as part of initiatives to promote Community IPM, four 2-week residential courses were organised for farmers who had completed Field Schools and wanted to train others. Some of the graduates of these courses are already managing FFS for other farmers.

 ·        The NGO, World Education, has been organising a pilot programme of IPM in rural schools. The programme, which is funded by FAO, UNDP and UNICEF, is being carried out in 6 Provinces.

 ·        Six pilot Field Schools for vegetable IPM were organised by FAO in 1998. Based on this experience a Training of Trainers (TOT) for vegetable IPM has now started. All participants are experienced rice IPM trainers, including field staff of the Department of Agronomy and NGOs such as ADRA and World Education.

China

 · A major new effort to promote IPM in China started in 1998, led by the National Agro-Technological Extension and Service Center (NATESC), of the Ministry of Agriculture, and involving Provincial Plant Protection Stations. Funding is being provided by the Government of Australia through FAO. Two TOT courses were

·        completed, in  Sichuan and Guangdong, with a total of 60 graduates. Both TOTs were facilitated by IPM trainers from Indonesia working alongside Chinese trainers.

 ·        A total of 200 Farmer Field Schools were organised in 1998 during May - October, each with 25-30 participants. Half of the FFS, which were spread across 5 provinces, were funded by the local governments.

 ·        Efforts to promote farmer-to-farmer training were also started in 1998, with two  10-day training workshops.  The workshops, in Sichuan and Anhui Provinces, were attended by a total of 50 farmers who had graduated from earlier Field Schools and had shown interest in facilitating further IPM activities in their communities.

 ·        A study tour was organized in March 1998 for 10 IPM Master trainers from the central government, Sichuan, Guangdong, Anhui, Hubei and Zhejiang Provinces. The group visited Indonesia to learn about Community IPM activities.

 ·        The Dutch-funded Poverty Alleviation Programme in Anhui Province has agreed to incorporate IPM training into their programme activities in the coming year.  In 1998, the programme has supported a short TOT course and 20 FFS in Huoshan county of Anhui Province.

 ·        An International Conference on IPM was held in Guangzhou, China from 15 to 20 June 1998. Senior staff from both of the FAO  Regional IPM Programmes (Rice and Vegetables) attended the meeting.
