A total of 200
Farmer Field Schools were organised in 1998 during May - October, each
with 25-30 participants. Half of the FFS, which were spread across 5
provinces, were funded by the local governments.

Efforts to
promote farmer-to-farmer training were also started in 1998, with two 10-day training workshops. The workshops, in Sichuan and
Anhui Provinces, were attended by a total of 50 farmers who had graduated
from earlier Field Schools and had shown interest in facilitating further
IPM activities in their communities.

A study tour was
organized in March 1998 for 10 IPM Master trainers from the central
government, Sichuan, Guangdong, Anhui, Hubei and Zhejiang Provinces. The
group visited Indonesia to learn about Community IPM activities.

The Dutch-funded
Poverty Alleviation Programme in Anhui Province has agreed to incorporate
IPM training into their programme activities in the coming year. In 1998, the programme has
supported a short TOT course and 20 FFS in Huoshan county of Anhui
Province.

An International Conference on IPM was held in Guangzhou, China
from 15 to 20 June 1998. Senior staff from both of the FAO Regional IPM Programmes (Rice and
Vegetables) attended the meeting.
