Regional Developments

 ·  The FAO Programme for Community IPM in Asia  started in January 1998. This is the name being given to Phase IV of the Intercountry Programme for IPM in Rice in Asia (ICP-Rice).  This phase, with a duration of 5 years, is being funded by the governments of Australia and Norway with a total donor contribution of US$ 19.6 million. Additional funding is being sought from other sources.

 ·  The Headquarters of ICP-Rice  officially transferred from Manila to Jakarta at the end of December 1997. Russell Dilts became the FAO Regional IPM Coordinator, and head of the ICP, in May 1998. Other positions have also been filled, including the Senior IPM Programme Development Officer (Andrew Bartlett) and the Senior IPM Scientific Officer (Peter Ooi) .  You can contact the team by Email at CommunityIPM@IBM.Net

 ·  The FAO Intercountry Programme for IPM in Vegetables (ICP-Vegetables), continues to be based in Manila, under the leadership of Max Whitten. Contact him at faoipm@IBM.net

 · In 1998, the ICP-Rice arranged a number of visits to study IPM in Indonesia in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture. These included: 10 IPM trainers from China in March, 16 staff from CARE International (various countries) in May, 5 IPM trainers from Nepal in November, and 12 Government Officials from  the Near East (various countries) in December.

 

·        Institute for Training and Development, in Amherst, USA. This training was organised by FAO with funds from the Government of Netherlands. Participants came from Indonesia (15), Vietnam (10), China (3) and Cambodia (2). The course covered English language skills, organization and management.

 ·        Asian trainers have been helping each other through a series of assignments facilitated by FAO. Indonesian trainers have conducted season-long training in China and Bangladesh, while trainers from the Philippines have conducted similar courses in Nepal and Laos.  Trainers from Vietnam and Cambodia have carried out a number of shorter international assignments.

 ·        A regional workshop was held in Nakornsawan, Thailand, in April 1998 to discuss IPM activities for school children. This was organised by World Education Asia, with support from FAO and CARE. Participants for this one-week event came from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Philippines.

 ·        In September 1998, The ICP-Vegetables organised another regional workshop on the use of biopesticides in IPM training programmes. The workshop took place in Dalat, Vietnam, and was attended by participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines Thailand, and Vietnam 

Cambodia

In 1998, FAO supported two season-long Training of Trainers courses for rice IPM. The training, which took place in Siem Reap,  was attended by 56 trainers from the provincial Departments of Agriculture.
