IPM in Tulang Bawang Udik,
Lampung

Tulang Bawang Udik Sub-district
is located about 30 kilometers to the west of the administrative centre of
Tulang Bawang Distinct, Menggala and 120 kilometers from the provincial
capital city of Bandar Lampung.
There are 14 villages in the sub-district with a total population
of 58,620. Ninety percent of
these people are involved in farming. The average area farmed ranges
between 0.50 and 1.0 hectares.
The majority of the people living in the sub-district arrived in
1972 as participants in the transmigration program. The local language of residents is
Javanese and their daily lives reflect the nuances of Javanese culture and
tradition. For example,
Javanese shadow puppet plays with the classic Javanese stories are common
in the villages of the sub-district.
There are 6,681 hectares of irrigated ricefields Tulang
Bawang Udik. Of the 6,681 hectares of irrigated ricefields, 2,730 hectares
are planted to a single crop of rice per year and the remainder is planted
to two crops of rice per year.
Tulang Bawang Udik is the leading producer of rice in its district
with an average yield of 4.8 tons per hectare.
IPM Field
Activities
IPM Field Schools. The first rice IPM Field School
(FFS) was conducted in Tulang Bawang Udik Sub-district in 1992 for 25
farmers from Karya Bakti Farmers Group in Makarti Village. Since then there have been 32 rice
FFS conducted by IPM Field Trainers, 17 rice FFS conducted by Farmer IPM
Trainers, six Follow-up FFS, and two soybean FFS. Tulang Bawang District
Government funded five of the FFS conducted by Farmer IPM Trainers.
In 1996, 15 IPM alumni from Tulang Bawang Udik were
trained as Farmer IPM Trainers and another 14 alumni were trained as
Farmer IPM Trainers in 1997.
Thus there are a total of 29 Farmer IPM Trainers in the
sub-district. The Farmer IPM
Trainers are spread among six villages. There have been three Farmer IPM
Trainer Workshops conducted for these Farmer IPM Trainers. There was a
Farmers Planning meeting held in July of 1997 and a Farmers Technical
Meeting in August of 1997.
Participants in these two forums were alumni and Farmer IPM
Trainers.
There have been 1,225 farmers who have completed rice
FFS in the sub-district, 150 farmers who have completed soybean FFS, and
50 who have completed Follow-up FFS. Ten villages have been the sites for
FFS, the remaining four villages of the sub-district have little potential
for either rice or soybean production because of the lack of water.
